Since Russia’s first HIV case in 1987 the virus has continued to spread at alarming rates and it is estimated that well over 100 Russians contract the virus every single day. Intranvenous drug use and unprotected sex with sex workers are considered to be the biggest sources of the spread of the virus. Discrimination against HIV +ve individuals is commonplace and social care is practically non existent giving rise to fears that actual figures might be as much as 3 or 4 times higher than official figures.
